Some time ago a CEO that I worked with tragically lost her young husband from a sudden and undiagnosed medical event. He was a rising leader in the police force, a volunteer fireman and an accomplished surf lifesaver. Above all – he was a loving husband and a father to a six-year-old boy.

He was an action man and a quiet achiever who had packed a lot into his years, but nonetheless, it was a life cut far too short.

His funeral, which was attended by 1000 plus people, was testament to his impact and the legacy he left through his family, friends, colleagues, and community. And this got me thinking. What sort of legacy I would leave?

  • Who would mourn me and why?
  • Did I really live out my business and personal values? Did I even know what these were?
  • Did I take opportunities when they came or, did I play it safe?
  • Did I positively impact my family and community - not just in thoughts but in actions?
  • Could I laugh at myself, or did I take life too seriously?
  • Did I appreciate the things that really mattered, the encouraging words, the beauty of our great outdoors, the time spent with grandchildren?

As business owners, it can be challenging to focus on personal goals or giving back, as work life and personal life blur together. However, if we take time to ponder some of these larger life questions, we can create a business foundation that serves our personal needs and values, rather than the other way around. For me, it's something I am always working on, but I know it's important.
