Inland Revenue Correspondence
Oct 4, 2022
Earlier this year Inland Revenue upgraded their computer system to improve efficiencies. There have been a number of benefits from this upgrade such as tax refunds being processed as soon as a tax return is assessed (click on the button below for more about this).
However, the upgrade has also generated a significant increase in correspondence. As your accountant and tax agent, we are copied into all Inland Revenue correspondence. Historically we have actively monitored all communications, using a system to classify and follow up on those items that require client attention. e.g. overdue returns, requests for more information.
Due to the increased volume of correspondence, effective immediately we will only monitor and follow up correspondence about important issues such as audits and information requests.
What this means for you:
You will need to monitor Inland Revenue correspondence more closely. The easiest and fastest way to do this is through Inland Revenue’s secure online services facility, MyIR.
Login to your business MyIR account and your personal MyIR account on a regular basis to check correspondence (perhaps once a week). Also check that your contact details for each account are up to date e.g. email address, mobile number, postal address.
For security reasons, please note that Inland Revenue will never ask you to supply any information via email. They may email you to let you know that correspondence is available for reviewing through your MyIR account. We recommend you open a new browser and login to MyIR, rather than following any links that may be in the email. If you are concerned about the legitimacy of an Inland Revenue email, you are welcome to forward it directly to your accountant or info@sudburys.co.nz and we will advise you on any required actions.
If you do not have access to the internet, Inland Revenue will communicate with you via post.
If you have any concerns about communicating with Inland Revenue, please call us on 09 430 4888 and we can help you identify the best way to stay informed.
