After being in the family since 1873, Hanley Hutchinson made the decision to retire and put the business and surrounding property up for sale with the hope of finding a special kind of buyer who’d do his family legacy justice.

On the other side of town long time Sudburys clients, Derek and Maree van der Kwaak were experiencing continued growth with their produce logistics business – The Produce Connection – and looking for bigger premises for their operations.

Sudburys began to conduct ground work researching the proposal and feasibility of buying Huanui Orchards for the van der Kwaaks to relocate their logistics operations. With the green light given, our advisors took care of financing, negotiating with the bank in terms of rates and determining the structure of the entity.

While the family had plenty of experience in produce and logistics, retail was a new challenge for them. The Sudburys team was able to provide operational advice and have our staff on site to work through spreadsheets and create more efficient reporting.

The van der Kwaak family completed refurbishments and in August 2018 reopened for business as Huanui Fresh alongside The Black Stump cafe. The full revamp has resulted in a rejuvenated space, beautiful layout and an emphasis on local, organic and eco-friendly produce.

Sudburys is delighted to be part of the Huanui Fresh story.

“We’ve had a long history of working with Steve and the team at Sudburys. As we’ve expanded our business, they’ve provided invaluable support on everything from negotiating with the bank to advice on running a retail operation. As well as getting the job done, Sudburys take a genuine interest in their clients and families – we’ve certainly appreciated the care, and humour!”
